Before I became a mom, I spent hours researching baby gear, comparing products, and trying to figure out what I actually needed. It didn't take long to realize that while everyone focuses on what the baby needs, new moms deserve just as much support.
The truth is, those first few weeks are all about survival. You're recovering, running on very little sleep, and learning an entirely new routine while caring for a tiny human who depends on you for everything. Having a few well-chosen essentials on hand can make those long days and even longer nights feel just a little easier.
Whether you're building your own registry or shopping for an expecting friend, these newborn must-haves aren't just for the baby. They're the items that help make life a little more comfortable, convenient, and manageable for a brand-new mom during those unforgettable first weeks at home.

My Newborn Must Haves
Baby Bottles
I chose to formula feed, but these bottles are great whether you're formula feeding or breastfeeding. Our favorite were the Parent's Choice bottles from Walmart. I know they're not as trendy as Dr. Brown's or Avent, but they worked so much better for us. They never leaked, felt really sturdy, and the nipples were thick and durable instead of flimsy. They're also BPA-free. They were one of those baby products that just worked, and I was happy to save a little money, too.
Baby Bottle Rack
This drying rack was an absolute lifesaver during the baby years. It kept bottles, nipples, pump parts, and other small pieces organized while saving a ton of space on the counter. It also comes with a bottle brush and nipple cleaner, which made cleanup even easier. We ended up using it long after the baby stage too. When my son became a toddler, it was perfect for drying his cups, lids, and other little accessories.
Burp Cloths
You probably won't need as many burp cloths as you think, but they're definitely something you'll want to have on hand. I rarely needed to keep one draped over my shoulder after feedings, but they came in handy whenever my baby spit up. They also ended up being useful for all kinds of little messes, from wiping drool to cleaning up unexpected spills. Trust me, you'll find yourself reaching for them more often than you expect.
Bibs
You'll definitely want to stock up on bibs. We used them every single day until my son was about a year old. Honestly, he wore one from the time he woke up until nap time, then again until bedtime. Between messy feedings and all the drool that comes with teething, bibs saved so many outfit changes and made cleanup a whole lot easier.
Nighttime Noise Machine
A nighttime noise machine can make a big difference during the baby stage. It creates a soothing sleep environment while masking everyday household noises that might wake your little one. It also becomes a familiar bedtime cue, helping your baby recognize when it's time to sleep.
Crib
This one was an easy decision for us. We actually didn't use the crib much until our son was around 3 months old. From the beginning, he slept in a family heirloom cradle right next to our bed, which made those middle-of-the-night feedings so much easier. We personally chose not to co-sleep because it never felt like the safest option for us. Once he was a little older, we transitioned him into a crib in his own room, and it worked out really well.
Baby Swing
A baby swing ended up being one of those baby items we reached for almost every day. It gave us a safe place to set our son down while we folded laundry, made dinner, or just took a few minutes to breathe. Like most baby gear, every baby is different, but if yours enjoys gentle motion, a swing can be a real lifesaver during those first few months. Just remember to follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines and move your baby to a flat sleep surface if they fall asleep.
Swaddle Wraps
Swaddle wraps were one of those baby items I didn't fully appreciate until we started using them. They made it so much easier to get a snug, secure swaddle without constantly worrying about a blanket coming loose in the middle of the night. They also helped our son sleep longer stretches by keeping his startle reflex from waking him up. If you're adding things to your baby registry, I definitely recommend having a few swaddle wraps on hand.
Car Seat Stroller Combo
A car seat is one of those baby essentials you simply can't skip. If you have a car, you'll need one from day one. I recommend buying a travel system that includes both an infant car seat and a matching stroller. It's convenient because you can move your sleeping baby from the car to the stroller without waking them up. Whether you're heading out for a walk around the neighborhood, running errands, or planning to jog, there's a travel system that fits your lifestyle.
Nasal Aspirator
You know those little bulb syringes that suck the boogers out of your baby's nose? They might not be glamorous, but they're one of those things you'll be so glad you have. I always called them "boogie suckers," and trust me, they get plenty of use during those first few colds.
Don't toss or lose the one the hospital sends you home with. For some reason, those always seem to work better than any of the replacements I bought later!
Diaper Rash Cream
I have two diaper rash cream favorites: Desitin Maximum Strength and Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Both have been absolute lifesavers for diaper rash and worked incredibly well for our little one. Anytime we noticed even a hint of redness, one of these usually cleared it up fast. They earned a permanent spot in our diaper bag and changing station. Five stars from our family!
Those are all of my newborn must-haves. But, of course, not every baby product was a winner. Here are a few things that just didn't work for us...
What Didn’t Work For Us
Breastfeeding Items
Like I mentioned earlier, I didn't breastfeed, so I never needed all of the pumps, bottles, or other breastfeeding gear. Because of that, I can't really recommend which pump is best or compare different products.
That said, I did use disposable nursing pads. For a little while after having my son, I would leak every time I got out of the shower, so they definitely came in handy. Thankfully, it didn't last very long.
Baby Bouncer
We had one, but I think we only used it a handful of times. Ours sat so low to the ground, and somehow it ended up really uneven after we put it together. I still don't know if it was the brand or if we assembled it wrong haha! We eventually gave up on it and just threw it away.
Boppy
I was convinced I needed a Boppy. Like, really convinced. It was one of those baby items I had my heart set on. But once my son was here, it barely got used. I originally wanted it so I could prop him up on the floor as he got a little older, but we only reached for it a handful of times before it ended up sitting in the corner.
Swaddle Blankets
I could never get the hang of swaddling with a regular blanket. No matter how many tutorials I watched, my baby always managed to wiggle right out! The Velcro swaddle blankets (the ones I mentioned above!) were an absolute lifesaver. They made those middle-of-the-night diaper changes so much easier, and I loved waking up every morning to my own little baby burrito. It was seriously the cutest thing.
Dr. Browns
I really wanted to love Dr. Brown's bottles, but they just weren't for us. No matter what we tried, they always leaked. After dealing with one too many messes, we finally gave up and moved on.
Avent Bottles
We had the same issue with Dr. Brown's bottles. They leaked constantly, no matter how tightly we screwed on the cap. It was disappointing because I really liked the design and shape of the bottles, but the leaking made them too frustrating to keep using.
Cloth Diapers
Nope. I would so much rather use disposable diapers. I know they're not the best choice for the environment, but cloth diapers just weren't realistic for us. The constant washing alone would have been enough to drive me crazy.
We had a tiny apartment, less than 1,000 square feet, and an old washing machine that sounded like it was about to take off every time it ran. The thought of washing diaper loads every day while juggling everything else? Absolutely not. Disposable diapers were one of those things that made life a little easier, and I have zero regrets about that choice.
Hello Bello Diapers
You know, the brand started by Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell? Their diapers are honestly so cute, and I really wanted to love them. But every time my son wore one and peed, he'd end up with the worst diaper rash. It almost looked like a chemical burn on his poor little baby butt, and I felt awful.
I even searched online to see if anyone else had the same experience, but at the time, I couldn't find much of anything. Maybe I was the only one... or maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places. It's been a while since I've checked, so who knows what people are saying now.
